Exploring the BIOFOS Renseanlæg Lynetten: Our Visit to a Wastewater Treatment Plant

On the 7th of March, we had the opportunity to visit BIOFOS Renseanlæg Lynetten, the largest wastewater treatment plant in Denmark, and it was a very informative experience. By treating the wastewater from 1.2 million inhabitants in the Copenhagen metropolitan area at their three treatment plants Lynetten, Avedøre, and Damhusåen they are an essential part of the urban infrastructure, yet it's often out of sight and out of mind. This visit gave us a deeper appreciation for the complex processes that ensure our water stays clean and safe.

Here are a few key takeaways from the visit:

1. The Importance of Wastewater Treatment
Wastewater treatment isn’t just about keeping our rivers and oceans clean. It's about protecting public health, conserving water resources, and reducing the environmental impact of industrial and residential waste. That way they can provide safe swimming conditions for Danes living in Copenhagen with accurately updated maps of the network of harbour baths and beaches.

2. Innovative Technology
The facility is able exploit the resources in wastewater as well as the exceptional layout of the Copenhagen metropolitan area to deliver sustainable forms of energy – district heating, biogas and electricity – to the utility network.

3. Sustainability in Action
We also learned about how the facilities are able to generate enough green energy from their treatment operations to offset more CO2 than the plant emits, making them Climate-positive.

4. Behind the Scenes
It was fascinating to see the operations firsthand. The plant’s dedicated team of engineers and technicians work tirelessly to ensure that everything runs smoothly, 24/7. They not only monitor the treatment process but also perform regular maintenance to keep everything in optimal condition.

Thank you very much to the chairpeople of our two committees joined for this visit: chairman of the ESG Committee Thomas Canguilhem, CEO of EcoTree, and chairman of the Innovation and Production Committee Luc Joncour, Plant Manager Thales DIS Denmark.

Thank you also especially to Mathieu Lamotte, Head of Hubgrade Sales & Marketing, Veolia Water Technologies Scandinavia, and Bjørk Hasager Sørensen, Head of Executive Secretariat and Communication, BIOFOS, for the guided tour and informative session.
